Nellie's Nest™ funds Hatching Young Readers™ program for local libraries

Nellie's Nest Cage-Free Eggs launched a program to stimulate interest in books and reading at an early age. The Hatching Young Readers program will encourage young people to visit their local libraries and become lifelong readers.

The program is the idea of elementary school teacher Sandra Laflamme, who spent five years teaching first grade prior to becoming a stay-at-home mom to her one year-old daughter, Piper. Sandra is also the wife of Farm Manager Jesse Laflamme.

"It's very important to spend time looking at books and reading with your child at an early age to help them develop an enjoyment for reading and books. Electronic entertainment takes up more of children's time at an ever younger age, and many of them are not developing strong reading skills and habits," she explains. "Hatching Young Readers' goal is to help emerging readers develop a life-long interest in reading."

The program will work with local libraries to introduce reading contests that reward young readers and provide financial support for the libraries.

To introduce the program, Sandra made a donation on behalf of Nellie's Nest Cage-Free Eggs to the Monroe Public Library and the Monroe Consolidated School Library at Monroe's Harvest Festival.

Nellie's Nest donates cage-free eggs to food banks

NellieDuring the week before Easter, we donated 720 dozen eggs each to food banks in Manchester NH, Boston and New York City. The Nellie's Nest Cage-Free eggs were delivered to the food banks just in time for Easter.

Farm Manager Jesse Laflamme was delighted about making the donations. "In these tough economic times, we all need to help each other. Donated food supplies are dropping just when the number of people who need assistance is rising."

The eggs were donated to the New Hampshire Food Bank, the Greater Boston Food Bank and the Food Bank for New York City. All three provide much needed assistance for women, children, seniors and the working poor. According to the Food Bank of New York City's website (www.foodbanknyc.org), the number of families experiencing food shortages has reached crisis levels. Low- to moderate-income families are often forced to choose between food and paying rent or utility bills. Many lack access to affordable, nutritious food, which can lead to higher concentrations of diet-related conditions like diabetes, obesity and hypertension.

Nellie"I'm pleased we can do this," Jesse continued. "What better day than Easter to have fresh eggs for breakfast."

Our cage free eggs come from hens kept in spacious chicken coops where they can roam, scratch, perch and nest as they please. Each egg contains approximately 200 mg of Omega 3 fatty acids. The hens are fed only all-natural grain with no animal by-products and are Certified Humane Raised & Handled™.

The distinctive purple package with Nellie right on top can be found in most supermarkets in the northeastern United States.
